Solar Info

Solar incentives are one of those topics where the more you read, the more confused you can get. Different programs, different eligibility rules, different timelines, and a lot of websites that are either oversimplifying or burying you in details you don’t need yet. This post covers the programs that actually matter for most residential solar […]

There’s a version of the solar conversation that a lot of Minneapolis homeowners have learned to dread. A sales rep shows up, runs through a presentation, throws out a big number, and spends the next hour explaining why you need to sign before the incentives disappear. It feels less like advice and more like pressure.

Most homeowners who end up going solar didn’t wake up one day and just decide. They spent months, sometimes longer, weighing the pros and cons. We created a checklist that is designed to help you think through this decision honestly.  Some items are straightforward, others require a little more digging. But by the time you’ve

If you’ve been researching solar or battery storage, you’ve probably started seeing smart panels come up in the conversation. They sound straightforward enough — a smarter version of your electrical panel — but the actual explanation of what they do and why someone would pay for one tends to be either too vague or too technical to be useful.

This post is the straight forward explanation on smart panels. What a smart panel is, what it actually does inside your home, how it fits into a broader energy plan, and the situations where upgrading to one makes genuine sense for a Minnesota homeowner.

Most homeowners think about energy the same way they think about water pressure — it’s either there or it isn’t, and the bill is just part of the deal. You use what you use, the utility sends an invoice, and you move on. That mindset made sense when electricity rates were stable and predictable. It makes a lot less sense now.

Minnesota electric rates have been rising faster than the national average, and that trend is not expected to reverse. Data centers, grid upgrades, and shifting demand patterns are all putting upward pressure on what utilities charge. For homeowners, the result is a bill that keeps climbing even when usage stays the same. The question is no longer just “how do I use less energy?” It’s “how much more expensive can my energy get?”

That’s what home energy management actually means.

Even with spring in bloom, we in Minneapolis know it’s not too early to plan for next winter.  Every January, the same thing happens. The bill arrives, the number is higher than expected, and the instinct is to assume something went wrong, the thermostat bumped up or an appliance running longer than it should. Sometimes

When homeowners think about going solar, much of the focus tends to be on the panels themselves. While panel quality does matter, the performance of a solar system depends just as much on how it is designed and installed. A well designed system can produce consistent energy for years. A poorly installed system can underperform,

When homeowners start researching solar, it is easy to focus on system cost, equipment, and potential savings. One factor that often gets less attention is who is actually designing and installing the system.

The choice between a national provider and a local company can have a meaningful impact on how the project is planned, installed, and supported over time.

For many homeowners, the biggest hesitation around solar or energy upgrades comes down to cost. Even when the long term benefits are clear, the upfront investment can feel like a barrier.

That is where incentives come into play. Minnesota offers a range of programs that help reduce initial costs and improve the overall value of energy upgrades. When these incentives are understood and applied correctly, they can significantly change how a project looks financially.
